AtlantiCare to host monthly Senior University sessions at AtlantiCare LifeCenter

AtlantiCare will host free, monthly Senior University educational events and classes, beginning February 28.

Classes are the fourth Tuesday of each month, from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the AtlantiCare LifeCenter, 2500 English Creek, Building 200, Egg Harbor Township. There is no charge to enroll in classes. Complimentary lunch is included.

Classes and events are designed for older adults, and address subjects relevant to seniors. Past classes have addressed heart health, chiropractic health, and featured experts in, stroke, diabetes, fall prevention, healthy eating, safety, and stress, and other topics.

The 2017 class schedule is:
“Medication Adherence”
Tina Ellis, RN, AtlantiCare Health Engagement, will share tips for safely managing prescriptions and over-the-counter medications.
“Balance Basics/Fall Prevention”
Awilda Guzman, CWC, wellness specialist, AtlantiCare Health Engagement, will discuss preventing senior falls.
“Nutrition for Adults”
Jesse Tannehill, RD, ShopRite will share tips for shopping for nutritional foods.
“Gardening for Good Nutrition”
Laura Engelmann, BSW, MHA, community health and wellness manager, AtlantiCare, will discuss simple gardening tips and share ideas for growing nutrient-rich crops.
“Ask Me 3”
Maribel Maldonado, CWC, wellness specialist, AtlantiCare
Three important questions to ask your healthcare provider at your next wellness visit.
“Interpreting Health Insurance”
Paul Mesgleski, Financial Counseling Services manager, AtlantiCare, share tips for understanding and using healthcare benefit plans.
“Chair Zumba® for Older Adults”
Louise Celestino, licensed Zumba® instructor, will demonstrate seated strengthening exercises designed to help increase core strength and stamina.
“Senior Spinal Health”
Karen Callaghan, DC, chiropractor and managing partner, Atlantic County Family Spine and Rehab Center, will discuss spinal health after age 65.
“Community Connections”
Lee Ann Hillis, BSW, social worker, AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, will discuss tips on utilizing local and county Senior Services and more.
“Keeping the Holidays Healthy”
Maribel Maldonado, CWC, wellness specialist, AtlantiCare, will lead a cooking demonstration featuring quick, delicious, and healthy food options for the holidays.
“Holiday Social”
Celebrate the season with lunch, music, and door prizes.
AtlantiCare began offering senior education more than five years ago, when it held a series of lectures over the course of eight weeks in the fall. Demand grew quickly, and AtlantiCare now offers classes and events monthly.
