Mother Virginia Corrales holding Baby Keylor—the first baby of 2018 born at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown at 1:39 pm on January 1st.
Across the globe, as many celebrated the new year, mothers and fathers welcomed the arrival of their precious bundles of joy. New parents Virginia Corrales and Samuel Rivera rang in the New Year with their new bundle of joy—baby boy Keylor Rivera. Baby Keylor arrived at 1:39 pm on January 1, 2018 at St. Catherine of Siena Hospital, weighing in 5 lbs. 10 oz. and was delivered by Dr. Dodis Kohan.

St. Catherine’s administrative team congratulated the new parents and showered them with a basket filled with baby essentials and flowers. In addition, the maternity staff celebrated with the proud parents and educated them about the new law recently passed on January 1, 2018—the nation’s strongest, most progressive and most comprehensive Paid Family Leave policy. For the first time, New Yorkers will have job-protected paid time off to bond with a new child, care for a loved one with a serious health condition or help relieve family pressures when a loved one is called to active military service abroad. When fully phased in, New Yorkers will be eligible for up to 12 weeks of paid time off. More information about this policy can be found here.

St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center is Baby-Friendly® Designated birth facility—the first hospital to earn the designation in Suffolk County. Baby-Friendly USA, Inc., is the U.S. authority for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (“BFHI”), a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The initiative encourages and recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Based on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, this prestigious international award recognizes birth facilities that offer breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence, and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies.
