Westchester Medical Center

Westchester Medical Center’s core team of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement specialists in WMC’s 1,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art hybrid operating room.
Westchester Heart and Vascular Institute, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), recently performed its 300th transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), a minimally invasive procedure that replaces a diseased aortic valve without open heart surgery.

Westchester Medical Center was the first hospital in the Hudson Valley to perform this lifesaving procedure and continues to be the leading heart center in the region, with TAVR results superior to national standards.*

“Our outstanding outcomes result from our team’s commitment to our patients and to implementing emerging technologies to provide the very best care,” says Steven Lansman, MD, Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Transcatheter Cardiac Valve Program. “By offering these revolutionary procedures, Westchester Medical Center is drastically changing the landscape of cardiovascular care in the Hudson Valley.”
Westchester Medical Center’s team of specialists in cardiothoracic surgery, interventional cardiology, echocardiology, radiology and cardiac anesthesiology, have performed more than 300 TAVR procedures, mostly on patients 80 years of age and older, who would be at higher risk for open-heart surgery.

The Medical Center is one of few hospitals nationwide that routinely perform TAVR under local anesthesia. TAVR procedures are performed in the hospital’s state-of-the-art hybrid operating room, a 1,000-square-foot suite that combines the sterile environment of a traditional operating room with the advanced imaging capabilities of a modern cardiac catheterization laboratory. The hybrid operating room allows for precision during the procedure, while providing a comfortable environment for patients.
Additionally, Westchester Medical Center remains at the forefront of advanced cardiac technology in our region, performing the innovative transcatheter mitral valve repair and transcatheter tricuspid valve repair using the MitraClip® device. This device is used to treat patients with moderate to severe valve regurgitation.

Westchester Medical Center’s core team of TAVR specialists includes: Hasan Ahmad, MD, interventional cardiologist; Chirag Badami, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon (not pictured); Joanne Bennett, FNP, Heart Valve Coordinator; Caitlin Ciallella, RN; Martin Cohen, MD, interventional cardiologist; Tanya Dutta, MD, Director of Echocardiology, non-invasive (not pictured); Chen Feng, MD, cardiac anesthesiologist; Joshua Goldberg, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon; Ryan Kaple, MD, interventional cardiologist; Steven Lansman, MD, Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery; Srihari Naidu, MD, Director of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy program; Angelica Poniros, RCS, FASE, Manager of Non-Invasive Cardiology Services (not pictured); Mala Sharma, MD, cardiologist; and Robert Timmermans, MD, Chief of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab.
