Sound Shore Medical Center of Westchester is pleased to applaud two of its own – Richard Garvey, MD, Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Iris Rosario, MS, CDN, Program Director of WIC, who were honored for their exceptional community outreach by The Adult Learning Center with its 2012 Angela Awards.

Commenting on the honors, President and CEO of Sound Shore Medical Center said, “Dr. Garvey and Ms. Rosario’s community efforts are certainly worthy of recognition.” He continued, “Both have made a significant difference not only in the Sound Shore area but beyond. We are proud of their dedication and their accomplishments to better the lives of others.”

Ms. Rosario is Program Director of SSMC’s Women, Infants and Children’s (WIC) Program. She administers this at three sites for this Federal Program that provides qualified individuals supplemental foods and nutrition education to support essential growth and development during pregnancy and early childhood. Participants include pregnant, breastfeeding and post-partum women and infants and children up to the age of five. She also developed and directs FIT-WIC. This Program focuses on healthy eating, physical activity and education to help curb the trend toward obesity in children 2-5 years of age.

As a “first responder” after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Dr. Garvey left his very busy practice to put his skills into action under very arduous conditions. His team saw unset bones, gaping cuts and disfiguring injuries. For many, his expertise was life-changing and in some cases life-saving. After returning from Haiti, Dr. Garvey has continued to aid the Country and its people. He and his classic rock band, “The Scrubs – made up of doctors and rockers – have played many venues in the intervening months with proceeds going to the American Red Cross/Haiti Relief.

In addition to their awards, each honoree received Proclamations from Westchester County Executive, Rob Astorino; the City of New Rochelle Mayor, Noam Bramson; U. S. Congresswoman Nita Lowey and New York State Representative, Amy Paulin.
