The Northwell Health Center for Weight Management at Syosset Hospital is taking a fresh approach to the psychological component of weight loss.

Dina Hirsch, PhD, is the center’s new psychologist and force behind the change in direction. She is also the senior psychologist at the Great Neck and Manhattan locations of Northwell Health’s Center for Weight Management. Dr. Hirsch previously worked at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park.

Dr. Hirsch is employing cutting edge weight loss strategies incorporating Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) into standard behavioral weight loss treatment. ACT focuses on teaching patients to accept uncomfortable thoughts or feelings rather than resist them as well as to engage in actions that are in line with their values.

“This type of therapy also teaches patients to identify their weight loss motivation and work toward that important goal,” said Dr. Hirsch.

Patients can learn more and experience this therapy through a series of 12 classes offered on the second and third Tuesdays of each month at 6 p.m. in the hospital’s conference rooms A and B. In addition to the classes, two support groups are available – one led by Dr. Hirsch and the other guided by Program Manager Christine Santori, RD – on the first Tuesday of the month at 11:30 a.m. and on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m.
