Metropolitan Hospital Center and Harvest Home Farmer’s Market, Inc. are pleased to announce the return of the Harvest Home Metropolitan Farmers Market this Friday, July 6. The market will feature fresh produce from local farmers in an effort to promote affordable healthy dietary options for Metropolitan Hospital patients, employees and residents of the East Harlem and Upper East Side communities. The market, located at East 99th Street and Third Avenue, will be open every Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM through November 16th. Spearheaded by the Metropolitan Hospital Community Advisory Board, the market will be operated by Harvest Home Farmer’s Market, Inc., an East Harlem-based non-profit organization dedicated to increasing access to local, farm-fresh produce to low-income neighborhoods. Metropolitan is one of seven city public hospitals hosting farmers market. The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) is part of a city-wide anti-obesity task force, made up of ten city agencies, formed to develop strategies and initiatives to help New Yorkers stay healthy and fight rising health concerns. Shoppers can pay for their fresh fruits and vegetable a number of ways: cash, EBT cards (food stamps), Green Checks, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) coupons, WIC coupons, and Health Bucks. Health Bucks are $2 coupons good for fresh produce at farmers markets. For each $5 of food stamps that a customer spends at farmers’ markets, they will receive one Health Buck coupon worth $2 for fresh fruits and vegetables at any farmers market. A limited supply of coupons will also be available through community organizations located in Health Department District Public Health Office neighborhoods in the South Bronx, North and Central Brooklyn, and East and Central Harlem. Organizations in these neighborhoods may apply to distribute Health Bucks as part of their nutrition programming. Metropolitan Hospital Center (MHC) is the community hospital of choice for residents of East Harlem, northern Manhattan and neighboring communities. Metropolitan provides culturally-sensitive care in a welcoming and hospitable setting, emphasizing primary care medicine and utilizing the latest advances in medical science. Metropolitan Hospital Center is part of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC), the largest municipal hospital and health care system in the country.
