LIJ Medical Center to Offer Free Cancer Screenings for Women
Story Number is : 071512101
PROVIDED
LIJ Medical Center

LIJ Medical Center’s Ambulatory Care Unit offers a variety of free cancer screening for women who lack health insurance. Screenings are available by appointment on weekdays and Saturdays.

The program is funded through the New York State (NYS) Cancer Services Program of Eastern Queens and Nassau County through a grant by the NYS Department of Health. LIJ also receives support from the Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Clinicians at LIJ offer clinical breast exams, mammograms, pelvic exams, Pap tests and colon cancer screenings. To be eligible for screening services at LIJ, women must be between the ages of 50 and 64 and lack health insurance.

Having regular breast, cervical and colon cancer screening tests increases the chance of detecting these diseases early, when they are most likely to be curable. And, studies show that people who lack health insurance are less likely to get screened for cancer and are, therefore, more likely to be diagnosed with an advanced stage of disease.

To make an appointment for a cancer screening, please call the LIJ Ambulatory Care Unit at 718-470-4165. Screenings will be held at LIJ Medical Center’s Ambulatory Care Unit, First Floor, Research Building, 270-05 76th Avenue, New Hyde Park. Mammograms are provided at the Diagnostic Imaging Center at the Center for Advanced Medicine at 450 Lakeville Road, which is located across the street from the hospital. The hospital is accessible by public transportation. Parking is available in the visitor’s garage.

Free cancer screening services are available through the Cancer Services Program in every county and borough in NYS. Uninsured NYS residents can call the Cancer Services Program toll-free referral line (1-866-442-CANCER), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to be directly connected to cancer screening services in the county in which they live or work. For more information about the NYS Cancer Services Program, visit http://www.health.ny.gov/diseases/cancer/services/.
