The Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Med was presented with a $33,280 grant from the enCourage Kids Foundation during a ceremony last week at Albany Med. It will be used to help support the children’s hospital’s music therapy program.

The enCourage Kids Foundation, through its Capital Region presence, empowers kids facing health challenges to lead their lives through cost-free family outings and uplifting hospital programs. By bringing laughter, comfort and countless smiles to more than 275,000 children annually, its programs offer relief from the constant burden of treatment, hospital stays and doctor’s appointments. Every Wednesday, the foundation generously organizes arts and crafts projects for pediatric patients receiving treatment at the children’s hospital, including the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders. In addition, the organization donates craft kits for those children staying overnight who may be unable to leave their rooms as well as restocks arts and crafts supplies.

“The enCourage Kids Foundation is truly about supporting the whole family. This grant in support of the music therapy program is just one way we can help bring smiles and laughter to the faces of pediatric patients and their families at Albany Med,” said Rainbow Doemel, manager of development and community outreach, Capital Region, enCourage Kids Foundation.

“On behalf of the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Med, I cannot thank the enCourage Kids Foundation enough for believing in the healing power of music,” said Jennifer Kilinski, medical musical therapist. “For the past decade, the Foundation has helped bring hope and support to our patients and their families through the Music Therapist & Equipment for Making Unique Sounds in Care (MUSIC) Program.”

Joining in the check presentation were staff from the children’s hospital and the Albany Medical Center Foundation.

The children’s hospital has a licensed, board-certified music therapist on staff, who works with infants, adolescents and teens. Music therapy is available to all patients at the Melodies Center and in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. Medical music therapy uses live music to help enhance a patient’s quality of life.
