The 34th annual Dancing in the Woods, the region’s premier holiday gala, raised nearly $500,000 for the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Med.

A group of volunteers transformed the former Kmart store in Latham, generously donated by Lia Auto Group, into a winter wonderland for more than 820 guests to enjoy at the December 1 event. For the 17th consecutive year, CDPHP was the title sponsor.

Since its inception in 1983, Dancing in the Woods has supported the highly specialized services and staff who care for patients and families as they deal with childhood cancer and related blood disorders.

“Our charitable neighbors, sponsors and volunteers not only make Dancing in the Woods such an important and cherished annual event, but also ensure that our patients can receive world-class care close to home,” said Ken Lucas, M.D., director of the Melodies Center. “We thank them for their dedication to the children and families of our region.”

The Melodies Center, the region’s only pediatric cancer center, sees approximately 70 new patients and receives more than 5,000 patient visits each year. Patients receive care from six pediatric hematologist/oncologists, highly trained chemotherapy nurses, a pediatric social worker, a case worker and a child life specialist. In addition, the program is supported by all of Albany Med’s pediatric subspecialists.
