St. Joseph’s Healthcare System, in partnership with the Center for Continuing and Professional Education at William Paterson University, invites you to the final seminar in the Spring 2012 “It’s All About the Kids” Children’s Health Series entitled, “Inside The Adolescent Brain: Risk Taking vs. Problem Solving.” The seminar will be presented by Sylvia Blaustein, M.D., Co-Chief of Adolescent Medicine at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, and Cynthia Northington, Ph.D., Professor of Education at William Paterson University, on Tuesday, May 1st from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at William Paterson University, 1600 Valley Road, Wayne, New Jersey.
The teenage brain is still developing! Researchers have found that the area of the brain responsible for reasoning, problem-solving, planning and organization develops last --- usually when the teen reaches his/her 20s. Drs. Blaustein and Northington will describe the stages of adolescent brain development and the impact on teens’ ability to concentrate, focus on complex tasks and perform in the classroom. They will discuss the appeal of risk taking and sensation seeking for teens, explain adolescents’ attempts to maintain focus, organize data and meet deadlines. Finally, they will offer both educational and behavioral strategies to maximize teen success both academically and socially.
There is a $20 charge for this workshop. Pre-registration for this seminar is available online at http://www.wpunj.eu/cpe. For more information, please call the William Paterson University Center for Continuing and Professional Education at 973.720.2354
