AtlantiCare has been recognized as a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” in the Healthcare Equality Index 2012 report, an annual survey conducted by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) organization. AtlantiCare earned top marks for its commitment to equitable, inclusive care for LGBT patients and their families, who can face challenges in accessing adequate healthcare.
AtlantiCare was one of a select group of 234 healthcare facilities nationwide to be named Leaders in Healthcare Equality. Facilities awarded this title meet several key indicators for equitable care, including nondiscrimination policies for LGBT patients and employees, a guarantee of equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and LGBT health education for staff.
“Just a few short years ago the healthcare industry wasn’t having conversations about LGBT healthcare equality,” said HRC president Chad Griffin. “Now, thanks to advocacy by the LGBT community and some standout leaders, growing numbers of healthcare providers, including AtlantiCare, are making an explicit commitment to treat all patients with dignity and respect. The healthcare industry is beginning to heed the call for fairness and compassion.”
“I am extremely proud to work for an organization that not only values the LGBT community and its employees, but that provides all community members access to equitable healthcare at every AtlantiCare location,” said Cydney Savage, LPC, director, Adult Outpatient Services, AtlantiCare Behavioral Health, and member of AtlantiCare’s LGBT employee resource group.
AtlantiCare’s Diversity & Disparities Council, which includes physicians, staff and leadership from throughout AtlantiCare, established employee resource groups (ERGs). The ERGs help support the mission of the Diversity & Disparities Council by educating staff about the culture; celebrating cultural holidays and events; representing AtlantiCare at cultural events in the community; enhancing recruitment efforts; and identifying the culture’s top health concerns and developing ideas for addressing these concerns. AtlantiCare ERG groups include African Americans, Asian Pacific Americans, Hispanic Americans, LGBT and Military.
“The AtlantiCare ERGs gave us the opportunity to learn more about how we as an organization can better meet the health and wellness needs of our diverse communities,” said Richard Lovering, vice president, Human Resources and Organizational Development, AtlantiCare. “We look forward to continued growth and supporting the goal of providing quality healthcare to the LGBT and all populations.”
The AtlantiCare Employee Resource Groups will host, “Showcasing the Strength in our Diversity,” to recognize AtlantiCare’s cultural diversity September 24 at the Campus Center, Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, Pomona. The event will celebrate diversity and focus on understanding the healthcare needs of diverse communities. John Quiñones, award-winning journalist and host of ABC’s “What Would You Do?” will deliver the keynote address.
