Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham

Julie Roby, a histotechnologist and laboratory and quality control supervisor at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham, accepts the 2017 Employee of the Year Award from hospital President and CEO, John Fogarty at a recent employee recognition event.
Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham (BID–Needham) recently celebrated 72 employees and their 900 years of combined service to the hospital. BID–Needham also recognized Julie Roby, a histotechnologist and laboratory and quality control supervisor, as the hospital’s 2017 Employee of the Year in recognition of her commitment to the hospital, her colleagues and patients.

As a histotechnologist in the lab, Roby prepares patient tissue samples for analysis and diagnosis. This past March, Roby also took on an expanded dual position as the interim director of the lab. Her leadership has inspired her colleagues and staff to nominate her for this award.

“Julie is truly a special individual, and it is an honor and privilege to work with her. said Heidi B. Alpert RN, MS, Senior Clinical Director, BID–Needham. “She is such a gift to the lab and BID–Needham — someone who always strives to do what is right and best for everyone around her. Julie is a role model for others at the hospital, and she truly exemplifies our core values of accountability, compassion, professionalism and respectfulness.”

“Julie has seamlessly stepped into the role of interim director of the lab, and we are grateful to Julie for her dedication and leadership,” added John Fogarty, President and CEO of BID–Needham. “Each year, we are proud to honor the employees who have chosen to spend their careers with us. We are fortunate to have such dedicated employees here, and I take great pride in working with to serve our patients.”

“I am truly honored and thankful for being nominated and receiving this great distinction,” Roby said. “The success of the lab could not have been made possible without the support of wonderful colleagues, mentors, and friends.”

BID–Needham honored 72 hospital employees for five, 10, 15, 25, 35, and 40 years of service. Two employees were recognized for 45 years of service to BID–Needham: Virginia Ferrenberg (Emergency Department) and Charlotte Mastromatteo (Nursing Administration).

The Employee of the Year selection is based on peer nominations submitted to a committee that evaluates each nomination for consistent demonstration of the hospital’s core values of accountability, compassion, professionalism and respectfulness.
