The Nightingale Awards for Excellence in nursing program was originally developed by the VNA South Central as a collaborative effort to celebrating outstanding nurses and elevate the nursing profession. The goals of the program are to encourage retention, inspire future nurses, focus public attention, and recognize the breadth and scope of nursing practice at the local level. Fanta Bayoh, the recipient from Yale University, Nguyen Nguyen, the recipient from Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU), Charles E. Crocco, the recipient from Quinnipiac University School of Nursing, Kathleen Shea, the recipient from Sacred Heart University College of Nursing, and Molly Louis, the recipient from Gateway Community College received their $1,200 scholarship by faculty and were joined by family and friends.

President & CEO, Lisa Dupuis stated, "The Nightingale Awards is a special time for not only those in the health care industry to reflect on all of the hard work and emotional work nurses do around us in our every day lives, but also to celebrate a profession that has through advancements in technology and medical care, has fundamentally remained patient-focused and essential to all of us. However, nurses cannot ignore the fact that health care is changing rapidly. Nurses are constantly taught new and evolving products, techniques, new systems to chart and code clinical information, cost control measures, and much more. The nurses on stage next week will be seasoned nurses who have worked through decades of change in environments like hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, physicians' offices and home care agencies and new nurses who have learned many of these elements while in school. Whatever their tenure, these nurses have figured out how to keep their efforts dedicated to the patient while navigating these complexities. Congratulations to all of the Connecticut Nightingale Award recipients!"
